Tony Hawk Proving Ground Demo Review
I spent some time with the THPG demo today and after being completely frustrated with the skate demo it was good to get back to a familiar skateboarding game. If you played Project 8 then you’re already pretty familiar with the gameplay style. Yes, it is arcadey and completely unrealistic, but it is fun. In addition to everything they had in Project 8 there are some cool new additions. First, they have expanded the Nail-the-Trick mode to add the Nail-the-Grab and Nail-the-Manual. Nail-the-Grab flows well with the already existing Nail-the-Trick and I’m looking forward to trying out the Nail-The-Manual because in a couple of the videos I’ve seen it looks really seamless. They have also broken down the skaters into three types. The competitors, the hard core, and the rigger/builder. Each skater type gets new attributes/skills and plays the game differently. Additionally there is a built in Video Editor for showing off all the cool tricks and lines you skate. This Tony Hawk iteration has three main cities it takes place in: Baltimore, Philadelphia and DC. IT is nice they went back to real locations after Project 8’s giant mess of a city. Overall Tony Hawk Proving Ground looks to a nice step up from Project 8. Personally I’m sure I’ll be playing it for a while. Hopefully the last few challenges are not as impossible as they were in Project 8.
